The fourth-generation Expedition hits dealership lots with a few appealing upgrades for the 2022 model year. Ford's popular three-row SUV is the largest one in the blue oval's lineup. Anyone shopping for a full-size SUV will want to put it on their shortlist. Let's take a look at the new Expedition.
Trim Levels (Exterior)
For the 2022 model year, Ford introduced a new XL base trim. It's a little light on features than the other four trims, though it does come with 18-inch wheels. The next level up is the XLT that touts a panoramic sunroof.
The sporty King Ranch adds 22-inch wheels, an attractive stone gray exterior, and LED headlights. You can save some money and go with the Limited trim. It features 20-inch wheels, a hands-free liftgate, and power-deployable running boards. The top-level Platinum trim has plenty to offer, including a satin aluminum paint job and roof rails with crossbars. The extended-length Expedition Max is available in every variant above the base XL.
Engine (Power)
Ford offers the Expedition with a 3.5-liter turbocharged V-6 under the hood. This engine produces 375 horsepower and 470 pound-feet of torque or 400 ponies and 480 foot-pounds of axle twisting force on the Platinum trim's more powerful twin-turbo. To round out the powertrain, this V-6 is mated to a 10-speed automatic transmission.
Performance
Thanks to this big SUV's rugged body-on-frame construction, plenty of ground clearance, and four-wheel-drive system, it's got what you need to get you where you're going. If the path ahead is a little rocky, opt for the FX4 Off-Road package. It offers all-terrain tires, an off-road-tuned suspension, electronic limited-slip differential, a high-performance radiator, skid plates, and a surround-view camera system.
When you've got a boat or camper to tow, move up to the heavy-duty trailer tow package. It adds trailer backup assist, 3.73 rear-axle gearing, and a cab-mounted trailer brake controller. When properly equipped, the Expedition can pull a best-in-class 9,300 pounds.
Interior
The 2022 Expedition is one of the most spacious, comfortable, and modern SUVs in the marketplace. Its high-end cabin gives luxury models a run for their money with seating for up to eight passengers and three-zone automatic climate control. Opt for the Platinum and get plenty of premium materials, including leather upholstery, real wood trim, massaging and ventilated front seats, power-folding seats, and active noise cancellation.
It also boasts enormous cargo space, especially the long-wheelbase Expedition Max. The standard configuration offers between 20.9 cubic feet of room behind the third row and a whopping 104.6 cubes overall, while the Max offers a maximum of 121.5 cubic foot cargo hold.
Ford's user-friendly SYNC 3 infotainment system offers Android Auto, Apple CarPlay, and an 8-inch touch screen. Additional standard features include four USB ports, a Wi-Fi hot spot, voice recognition, and satellite radio.
Safety Features
Ford rolls out the Expedition with a suite of safety features as part of the Co-Pilot360 system. It includes available driver assistance tools such as automatic high beams, cross-traffic alert, blind-spot warning, a lane-keeping system, and automatic emergency braking.
